We were founded in 1995, in Reykjavík, Iceland. Our main activity has been to hold public lectures (in Icelandic) on various aspects of Canada. Although the most frequent topic has been the Western Icelanders, our speakers have also been chosen for their expertise on other general aspects of Canada; such as the sciences, arts and literature, and the politics. Thus we have attempted to attract the general Icelandic public, as well as people interested in North Americans of Icelandic descent, to these general cultural lectures. (The lecture meetings, which had reached 27 in January 2001; have all been held at the University of Iceland.) An objective of ours has also been to involve people in our activities who have been in Canada or are from Canada. Our general frame of operation has been to hold a public meeting every other month, and a board meeting in the month between; all year round. Our most active committees have been the Editorial committee, the Musicmaking committee, and lately; the Reading Circle.
